Revenge of the Ant Baits!
Every spring, Lisa and I start finding ants in our kitchen. They emerge mostly near the sink and then spread out searching for good things to eat. Needless to say, with three little boys dropping half of every meal on the floor, there is never a shortage of provisions for them to gather up and take back to the colony. And so they have prospered.
Until recently we weren’t sure what kind of ants they technically were. We knew that they were small, black, and smelled like blue cheese when we crushed them, so we called them the Blue Cheese Ants. When we shared these little observations with our friend Teresa (a pest control authority from her time with Alpha Ecological), she immediately informed us that they were Odorous House Ants. She also informed us that we could get them under control pretty easily just by setting out liquid ant baits for them.
Well tonight we decided that the colony had become a little too prosperous, so we went shopping for ant baits. We settled on a brand called Terro® Liquid Ant Baits, partly because of this winsome text on the back of the box:
“ATTRACTS AND KILLS ALL COMMON HOUSEHOLD ANTS INCLUDING: Argentine ants, Pavement ants, Odorous house ants, Cornfield ants, White footed ants, Little black ants, Big headed ants, Acrobat ants, Ghost ants, Crazy ants and other sweet eating ants.”
It was the part about Crazy ants that sold me. If this stuff can kill Crazy ants, then it’s good enough for me.

Hmmm… I wonder if they have similar traps for Thief Ants. We have those. They tend to stay away from sweet things and go for the meat and protien items. Eww. Meat eating ants. Anyway – maybe we will look for some traps too.

Muahahahahaaaaa… take it home my little friends. Take it home and share it around… there’s enough for everyone.

Clint do you know if the stuff is safe for young kids. I have seen ants around my place also.

Well, it’s poison, and in that sense is definitely not safe for kids, but they do sell it in “child-resistant” dispensers that supposedly only let ants inside. We’re placing the baits up on counter tops and in places that the kids can’t reach for the most part. Another option would be putting the baits out at night and picking them up in the morning so that they were never around the kids…

John I’m beginning to get a little worried about you lol. Nice to know they are so easy to get rid of Clint. Our little ant colony has become quite large since the spring weather arrived. We had them all through the winter but then they were few and far between. Now they are wanting to take over! Maybe we have the crazy variety =)

ROFL! I actually heard about “crazy ___ ants” recently (I can’t recall the middle name) on the news. They’re called “crazy” ’cause they swerve randomly all over the place (drunk-scurrying ants?) unlike typical ants that file in lines. KILL ‘EM! KILL ‘EM! Friggin’ ants….GRRR!!!

“sweeting eating ants” — mmmm. I really like a handful of sweet eating ants to snack on. They need to be in season though.

Now, if you had the “Big headed ants” all you have to do to get rid of them is make the opening smaller….
